North
04:41
|
|||
Small moose stranded in the middle of a long bridge crossing over shallow water. "Wait here until I come back down."
Red bird flying in the heights above a great herd crossing over a northern border. "You know, you could have it all."
I've been told the north is cold,
but it was the greenest I'd ever seen.
So darling, if you'll grow, let's grow together.
Old man sitting in the railway says it hard and long to get where I'm going. "Love keeps this heart alive."
Mother, I feel you birthing love like a bear in winter, (saying), "I have a name I will give you one day. Just wait here with your tiny hands."
I've been told the north is cold,
but it was the greenest I'd ever seen.
So darling, if you'll grow, let's grow together.

Back when the wars began and the walls all caved in
We breathed in the dust and dead skin
Counting the cost of our sin
But it won't matter that much when we're older
But it won't matter that much when we're colder
But it won't matter that much when we open our eyes
We wandered through the crowd and we heard the trumpet sound
We breathed in the water, not to drown
And heard the blood crying out
But it won't matter that much when we're older
But it won't matter that much when we're colder
But it won't matter that much when we open our eyes
Come to me now, four winds
Let me feel your breath on my skin
Pray for me now, Saint Julian
I see a white stag running in my head
But it won't matter that much when we're older
But it won't matter that much when we're colder
But it won't matter that much when we open our eyes

Like a River

Juan Diego holds his father's calloused hands
Like a red rose withered in the Mexican sun
Makes the sign of the cross and he points down the road
To the hill, to where his father's gone
After all the birds have flown
O Love, like a river, won't you carry me?
Juan Diego wipes the dirt from his hands
Like red blood, bleeding from the Mexican sun
Makes the sign of the cross and he points down the road
To the hill where our mother came
After all the birds have flown
O Love, like a river, won't you carry me?
And in this desert of dust and stone
O Love, like a river, won't you carry me?

Porch Light
07:33
|
|||
We drove out into the night west of Tucson with the gaslight on
A couple of miles and we broke down in the desert and stayed for the night
(and you said)
"This is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock instead of sand."
We left our mud-stained clothes on the washroom floor, left them for mom
Just like the days we'd stay indoors with the sprinkler in the backyard on
I watched a flaming sword land in my front yard when I left home
And for years down these roads I've been running from the devil
But he called the backseat
And this is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock instead of sand.
I stopped for a drink down in Rosedale, fifty miles from the Grapevine.
Broken and buzzed, I was tired. I was waiting for a sign from the Lord.
I knew I couldn't go back home, but I called you just to hear your voice.
You picked up and I heard you breathing, then you said to me,
"I'll leave the porch light on."
And this is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock,
But leave the porch light on.
