lyrics

We drove out into the night west of Tucson with the gaslight on
A couple of miles and we broke down in the desert and stayed for the night
(and you said)

"This is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock instead of sand."

We left our mud-stained clothes on the washroom floor, left them for mom
Just like the days we'd stay indoors with the sprinkler in the backyard on
I watched a flaming sword land in my front yard when I left home
And for years down these roads I've been running from the devil
But he called the backseat

And this is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock instead of sand.

I stopped for a drink down in Rosedale, fifty miles from the Grapevine.
Broken and buzzed, I was tired. I was waiting for a sign from the Lord.
I knew I couldn't go back home, but I called you just to hear your voice.
You picked up and I heard you breathing, then you said to me,
"I'll leave the porch light on."

And this is not the miracle I had hoped for.
This is not the house I thought I'd built on a rock,
But leave the porch light on.
